Raleigh Rebuild (Part III)

May 24, 2010

It seems that 40 years ago they used to use real steel, not recycled soda cans. All traces of surface rust have disappeared. I used an angle grinder with a flexipad and fine grits for the tubes. The lugs were sanded manually.

In retrospect, it would have been much easier (and tons quicker) if I had it sandblasted. Though, I did not know anyone who has experience in sandblasting bike frames and doing it safely with fine mixes.

Gnome Color Manager

April 29, 2010

I was checking out the feature list of the upcoming version of Fedora (Fedora 13 – Goddard) and my jaw dropped as soon as I reached the sixth line.

Complete: 100%
Name: ColorManagement
Description: GNOME Color Manager is a session framework that makes it easy to manage, install and generate color profiles in the GNOME desktop.

This is big news for Linux photography. At last, the first steps towards system wide, OS based color management are being implemented. This is a luxury that Windows and Mac users have been enjoying for years. I expect that a system wide CMS and true 16bit color support in Gimp will allow Linux photography to take off. When this reaches a certain maturity level it has the potential to change the way photographers work (professionals included) and shake the waters in the digital photography market.

According to gnome.org , GNOME Color Manager will be soon bundled with some distributions.

Raleigh Rebuild (Part II)

April 10, 2010

Disassembling was straightforward (for the most part). Big exceptions were the seatpost, the cranks and the drive-side bottom bracket cup.

I finally managed to save the cup, but had to sacrifice the seatpost and cranks. It took days, substantial amount of WD-40 and several tricks. The bike is now ready for color stripping and sanding.

Raleigh Rebuild (Part I)

March 26, 2010

This was my dad’s 1973 Raleigh. Not any special or high-end model, but of very special sentimental value.

I recently decided to (try to) rebuild it. I am going to pay for leaving it outside to be beaten by the elements for the last 8 years. This is the “before” state.
